Machining UP GM 203 (Hm 2471)

Glass-mat reinforced polyester hard laminate with high electrical insulation performance and good machinability - for insulating and structural parts up to 130 °C continuous service temperature.

Material

Overview

UP GM 203 is the designation under the international standard EN 60893 for the same product traditionally designated Hm 2471 under DIN 7735 in Germany - both standard designations refer to one and the same material: a glass-mat reinforced hard laminate made of unsaturated polyester resin ("hartmatte"), NEMA equivalent GPO-3. Because both the EN and the DIN designation are in common use on the market, we maintain two content-identical pages for this material - one under UP GM 203, one under Hm 2471 - so you can find it under either name. The material combines high electrical insulation performance with good resistance to arc tracking and creepage (CTI 600) at a limiting temperature of 130 °C.

Glass-mat hard laminates ("hartmatte", UP GM) belong to the family of industrial laminates: glass-fibre mats are impregnated with a thermoset polyester resin and pressed under heat and pressure into sheets or rods. Unlike thermoplastics, the cured thermoset does not melt but remains dimensionally stable, hard and mechanically resilient. Within the hartmatte family, UP GM 203 (Hm 2471) represents the standard grade with solid mechanical strength and a good price-performance ratio. The mechanically upgraded grade UP GM 204 (Hm 2472) offers, on the same basic construction, higher flexural and tensile strength as well as a higher limiting temperature of 155 °C - for applications with elevated thermal or mechanical loading.

At Liedtke Kunststofftechnik we machine precision parts from sheets and rods - sawing, milling, drilling and turning can be carried out cleanly and accurately with sharp, carbide-tipped tools; because of the abrasive glass-fibre content we use wear-resistant tools and adequate dust extraction. Typical applications are found in electrical engineering and switchgear construction (low- and medium-voltage), in transformer and electrical machine engineering, and in general jig and tool making.

Questions & Answers

Frequently Asked Questions about UP GM 203 (Hm 2471)

1What is UP GM 203 (Hm 2471)?+

UP GM 203 is the EN 60893 designation for the same glass-mat reinforced polyester hard laminate known under DIN 7735 as Hm 2471 - NEMA equivalent GPO-3. It is one and the same product under two standard designations that are both common on the market, not two different materials. The material offers high electrical insulation performance, good resistance to arc tracking and creepage (CTI 600), and is suitable for continuous use up to 130 °C.

2How is UP GM 203 (Hm 2471) machined at Liedtke?+

We machine precision parts from sheets and rods - sawing, milling, drilling and turning can be carried out cleanly and accurately with sharp, carbide-tipped tools. Because of the abrasive glass-fibre content we use wear-resistant tools and ensure adequate dust extraction. This allows us to reliably produce high-quality insulating and structural parts, from single items to series production.

3What determines the price of a UP GM 203 (Hm 2471) part?+

Component price is determined mainly by sheet thickness or rod diameter, dimensions, material utilisation (offcut), machining effort and batch size. UP GM 203 (Hm 2471) falls in the mid-price segment of technical insulating laminates. We are happy to quote binding prices on request based on your drawing.

4When is UP GM 203 (Hm 2471) not the right choice?+

UP GM 203 (Hm 2471) is not declared suitable for direct food contact. For continuous use above approximately 130 °C, or particularly high mechanical loading, the upgraded grade UP GM 204 (Hm 2472) is the better choice. The thermoset material is also unsuitable for non-machining forming or welding processes.
