PPS, glass-fibre reinforced 40 % (black)

Machining PPS GF40 black

Black PPS reinforced with 40 % glass fibres, high stiffness and heat deflection temperature up to 260 °C. We machine precision parts from it, from batch size 1.

Overview

What is PPS GF40 black?

PPS GF40 black is a polyphenylene sulphide reinforced with 40 % glass fibres. The high reinforcement raises stiffness and heat deflection temperature to a level otherwise reached only by high-performance materials – with the chemical resistance, inherent flame retardancy and almost negligible moisture absorption typical of PPS. The black colouring is used where dark, opaque components are required.

PPS GF40 black in detail

1What is PPS GF40 black?+

PPS GF40 black is a polyphenylene sulphide reinforced with 40 % glass fibres. The high reinforcement raises stiffness and heat deflection temperature to a level otherwise reached only by high-performance materials – with the chemical resistance, inherent flame retardancy and almost negligible moisture absorption typical of PPS. The black colouring is used where dark, opaque components are required. The coefficient of linear thermal expansion of 30 · 10⁻⁶/K is in the range of aluminium, enabling high-precision, temperature-stable parts.

2How does Liedtke machine PPS GF40 black?+

PPS GF40 black can be machined using all conventional cutting methods; carbide or diamond tools are required because of the highly abrasive glass fibres; sharp cutting edges and good cooling via chip removal avoid heat build-up and residual stresses in the part. For tight tolerances and thick-walled parts, we recommend intermediate annealing to relieve machining stresses; thanks to the low moisture absorption, no conditioning is required.

3When should I choose PPS GF40 black?+

PPS GF40 black is used wherever stiff, dimensionally stable components are required at high temperatures and in aggressive media – for example in the oil and gas industry, in the electrical and electronics industry and in vehicle construction:

  • Pump housings, impellers and valve parts for hot media
  • Insulating carriers, coil formers and connectors
  • Precision parts with low thermal expansion
4What determines the price of a PPS GF40 black part?+

PPS GF40 black is calculated individually based on drawing or sample. The part price is determined mainly by the semi-finished form and dimensions, material utilisation and offcuts, machining effort and batch size. We are happy to provide binding prices on request.

5When is PPS GF40 black not the right choice?+

The limits of the material are equally important:

  • Brittle behaviour, very low elongation at break
  • Highly abrasive, carbide tools required
  • Not generally declared for food contact (see FDA declaration)
6Advantages and disadvantages of PPS GF40 black+

An honest assessment:

  • Advantage: Very high stiffness and heat deflection temperature (HDT 260 °C)
  • Advantage: Continuous service temperature 220 °C
  • Advantage: Very low thermal expansion and creep
  • Advantage: Inherently flame retardant, chemically resistant, very low moisture absorption
  • Disadvantage: Brittle behaviour, very low elongation at break
  • Disadvantage: Highly abrasive, carbide tools required
  • Disadvantage: Not generally declared for food contact (see FDA declaration)

Typical properties

  • Very high stiffness due to glass fibre reinforcement
  • Very high continuous service temperature
  • Inherently flame retardant

Typical industries

  • Oil and Gas Industry
  • Electrical Industry
  • Automotive Industry
