Frequently asked questions

PE-UHMW AST black in detail

1What is PE-UHMW AST black?+

PE-UHMW (ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene, also known as PE 1000) belongs to the polyolefin family and is characterised by an exceptionally low coefficient of friction, high wear resistance and very good impact strength – even at low temperatures. In the antistatic AST version, the material is additionally set to be electrically dissipative and controllably discharges electrostatic charges, which reduces dust deposition. Liedtke stocks this type in black with FDA suitability for food contact.

2How is PE-UHMW AST black machined at Liedtke?+

PE-UHMW AST can be milled, turned, drilled and sawn well with sharp tools suited to tough plastics. Low cutting speeds and good chip removal improve surface finish; before machining, the semi-finished product should be at room temperature and/or stored for at least 24 hours under normal ambient conditions. Manufactured components can be used in the food industry – however, the specific approval for a particular component always remains the responsibility of the manufacturer of the finished product.

3When should I choose PE-UHMW AST black?+

PE-UHMW AST black is suitable when several of these requirements come together: wear parts with a very low coefficient of friction and permanent self-lubrication, dust-sensitive environments where electrostatic charging must be avoided, and components with food contact requiring FDA suitability.

4What determines the price of a PE-UHMW AST part?+

PE-UHMW AST is priced in the mid-range of engineering plastics – above standard plastics such as PE-HD due to the antistatic treatment and FDA qualification, but significantly cheaper than high-performance plastics such as PEEK or PPSU. Component size, geometry and post-processing effort have the greatest influence on part price.

5When is PE-UHMW AST black not the right choice?+

PE-UHMW AST black is not always the right choice: for high requirements on stiffness, dimensional stability or continuous service temperatures above around 80 °C, engineering plastics such as PA or POM or high-performance plastics are often better suited. The black version is also unsuitable when transparency is required.

6Advantages and disadvantages of PE-UHMW AST black?+

An honest assessment: Advantages: Very low coefficient of friction and permanent self-lubrication, high wear and abrasion resistance, high impact strength even at low temperatures, antistatic treatment reduces dust deposition, FDA-compliant for food contact. Disadvantages: lower stiffness and dimensional stability than PA or POM, lower permissible continuous service temperature than high-performance plastics, more demanding machining than many other thermoplastics, no transparency in the black version.
