Frequently asked questions

Onyx FR in detail

1What is Onyx FR?+

Onyx FR™ is a flame-retardant variant of Onyx for additive manufacturing using the FDM process. It achieves the UL94 V-0 fire rating at wall thicknesses of 3 mm or more (with UL listing, UL Blue Card) at mechanical properties comparable to Onyx.

2How is Onyx FR processed at Liedtke?+

Onyx FR is built up additively, layer by layer, from filament using the FDM process, in the same way as standard Onyx. The fire classification applies to the stated minimum wall thickness and should be confirmed for the specific part. Being a hygroscopic nylon, the filament is stored dry.

3When should I choose Onyx FR?+

Onyx FR is a good fit for parts that must meet non-flammability requirements alongside mechanical performance – for example weld fixturing, aerospace clips and brackets, or brackets in electrical and energy engineering. With appropriate qualification, the material is also suitable to meet the FAR 25.853 aerospace flammability standard.

4What determines the price of an Onyx FR part?+

Part price is mainly determined by part volume, print time, infill density, post-processing effort and batch size. Onyx FR is priced above standard Onyx due to the flame-retardant formulation. We are happy to quote binding prices on request based on your 3D model.

5When is Onyx FR not the right choice?+

Where no fire classification is required, the less expensive standard Onyx is usually the more economical choice. Onyx FR is not intended for food contact. Where electrostatic dissipation is required, Onyx ESD is the better fit.

6Advantages and disadvantages of Onyx FR+

An honest assessment. Advantages: flame retardant to UL94 V-0 at wall thickness ≥ 3 mm with UL listing, mechanical properties at Onyx level, compatible with all continuous fibre systems, suitable with appropriate qualification for FAR 25.853. Disadvantages: hygroscopic – requires dry storage, not intended for food contact, higher material cost than standard Onyx.

Typical properties

  • Flame retardant, UL94 V-0 at wall thickness ≥ 3 mm (UL Blue Card)
  • Compatible with all continuous fibre systems (incl. carbon fibre, carbon fibre FR, Kevlar®, fibreglass, HSHT fibreglass)
  • High stiffness and strength for a 3D printing material
  • Suitable, with appropriate qualification, to meet the FAR 25.853 aerospace flammability standard

Typical industries

  • Aerospace
  • Electrical / energy engineering
  • Jigs, fixtures and tooling
